A New Paradigm for Cruising

Alesund, Norway

We are somewhat behind in our posts, and wanted to get in a few words about Alesund even though it is a week in our wake.

Alesund is our favorite “big” Norwegian town (so far). The harbor area is extremely tight, barely enough room to turn Wind Horse around, and high on the fun meter with 25 knots of wind blowing straight down the channel.

There is room for maybe a dozen moderate sized fishing vessels or yachts, the landscaping is lovely, and there is a bit of sculpture to titillate the senses. The “mall” with grocery store is a short walk (as is everything else).

A devastating fire in the early 1900s turned the city to ash. Help from around the world poured in and by 1905 the city had been rebuilt.

As is common in many of the Norwegian towns we have visited there are large areas of shopping devoted to pedestrians.

Lots of soft pastel colors are in use, with a very nice affect on this sunny day.

Coming from the Sonoran Desert in Arizona we were intrigued with this sweatshirt.

This young Norwegian artist had only recently taken up oils. An American painter had been sleeping on his couch and in exchange for room and board was teaching this willing student to paint. As much as we enjoy Alesund, with the Norwegian national holiday (and its parties) coming in the next couple of days, we are going to depart and look for a quieter environment.

“The 83ft-long (25m) wave-piercer...could easily be mistaken for the spawn of the Royal Navy with its unpainted battleship grey, all-aluminum body. But that day, in those conditions, it was the only boat that I would have wanted to climb aboard to face the English Channel.” --Motor Boat & Yachting

“This would have to be the most intriguing offshore cruising powerboat I have come across. Conceptually, Steve Dashew has possibly developed a new paradigm for offshore cruising…”
