A New Paradigm for Cruising

Rudder Turn Speed – Getting It Right

FPB64 WH Pumpset

Various pilot manufacturers offer different ways of powering the rudder.

On larger yachts these usually take the form of a continuous running pump with high speed solenoid valves to adjust hydraulic flow direction. There are other companies that use a reversing pumpset with pump and motor directly coupled. Neither choice allows for adjusting the flow rate of the hydraulic system, other than with a voltage change to the motor which allows a second speed.

The WH pumpset, shown in the photo above, controls speed in two ways. The first is by adjusting pulley ratio. The second is by pulsing the power to the motor, slowing it down if need be.

The FPB 64 is initially set for ten degrees per second rudder travel. We are 90% certain this will be ideal. However, we will have on hand additional pulley and V-belt sets in case we need to change up or down.

    Steve,

Any reason you can not use a variable speed pulley on one side?

    Hi Bill:
Possible, but it is simpler to figure out what is required during trials and then set it up that way.

“The 83ft-long (25m) wave-piercer...could easily be mistaken for the spawn of the Royal Navy with its unpainted battleship grey, all-aluminum body. But that day, in those conditions, it was the only boat that I would have wanted to climb aboard to face the English Channel.” --Motor Boat & Yachting
