I got the Offshore Cruising Book and I really enjoy it but it didn’t say much about inverters–Any recommendations (for a) 48-foot alum.boat, 800 amp. hrs.? Thank you, Dale

Hi Dale: There are all sorts of great inverters on the market these days. We’ve been using a Trace model 2500 (24 volt) with a built-in three-stage battery charger. After five years it is still going strong. I would look at the decision on what to buy as follows:

1-Battery capacity does not seem to be an issue. If you are going to be using the inverter for long periods, at high loads, the engine can always be run to charge while the inverter is trying to draw down the batteries. However, our own experience is that the inverter is typically used for very short periods so battery drain is not a problem.

2-Buy the highest capacity you can fit and afford. The efficiency range of the big units seems so good that there are only minor losses compared to an optimally sized unit. This way the power circuit, connectors, etc. are oversized–which means they will last longer.

3-Decide if you want a battery charger built in. There are some really nice three-stage chargers built in which add very little to cost.

4-Sine wave or square wave is the next issue. The pure sine wave inverters work better with some electronics, they say. However, we’ve always used square wave models (which until recently were more efficient) and never had any trouble running computers, printers, etc. We presently have both a Mac and PC computer and related peripherals hooked up to the Trace square wave unit. Good Luck–Steve Dashew
