Our wifi amp/preamp booster recently died and at the suggestion of Troy Bethel of Yacht Dynamics we picked up an Alfa Networks AWUSO36NH two watt booster. This is connected with a USB cable (our previous unit was ethernet based).

We found the installation of the software relatively simple, and the unit works great. At US$35 (we ordered ours through Amazon) it is hard to go wrong.

There are two antennas, a directional shown in the photo and vertical. In Palma Harbor when the built in wifi reciever of our Mac Book Pro would not pull in the marina wifi signal the Alfa did the job. When a big powerboat moored alongside the signal on the vertical antenna dropped considerably, but the directional antenna got us back to usable signal level.

We do have a high gain antenna on the stern with which the Alpha will work. Troy suggests using the high gain antenna in remote areas and the saller Alpha vertical if there are lots of signals from which to choose (otherwise, a situation with too many signals can result).

The Alpha works so well we are going to buy a second.
