En route to Panama. Getting back into the groove after a day and a half at sea.<\/div>\n

We’ve been at sea now for a day and a half. Turtle Bay on the Baja peninsula is in our wake, the Pacific High is feeding us a lovely northwesterly with which to run, and Wind Horse<\/em> and her crew are feeling free. <\/p>\n

It does seem to be getting harder to cut the dock lines. Between leaving family, business issues tied to the land, and closing the house for an extended period we both felt this was our hardest pre-departure cycle yet. Wind Horse<\/em>, happily, was not a part of these issues. Give her some clean oil, a new coat of bottom paint, and check the usual things in the engine room and she is happy.<\/p>\n

We’re heavily loaded, with full fuel tanks, a very full basement of stores, and 500 US gallons of fresh water. We could reduce the water, and make it as we need it, but this weight corresponds to the FPB 64 at 3\/4 load and we want to see how the downwind performance feels.<\/p>\n

As expected, we are a little sluggish in this breeze and modest sea state. Still, we are averaging 11 knots running at 1900 RPM, with the engines loafing. We are seeing occasional surfs to 14 knots. At this displacement we need bigger waves and more wind to really get into a groove.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, this is very pleasant cruising. Quiet, very little motion, and just enough warmth topside to make the flying bridge enjoyable. And the view…360 degrees of blue sky, bluer ocean, and nothing on the horizon. <\/p>\n

It will take a few days for our bodies to adjust to the three hours on three off watch schedule, which is why we will probably not stop until we reach Panama – subject to change of course There are about ten days left to the 2800 mile passage.<\/p>\n

We have a pair of high def video cameras aboard, and a new Imac Apple Computer running Final Cut in the edit bay (aft starboard cabin). The output of these little cameras is wonderful, and Final Cut looks to be as easy to use as advertised. We’ll learn more about this as we go. The key question is can we shoot, capture, and do rough edits at sea? If this works, it gives us a chance to see how the video assembles, and if we are missing any shots – which we can then capture. If it doesn’t work, then we are stuck with a mass of footage which has to be sorted at anchor – a much bigger job. We have some nice surfing video now, and if we can get our Verizon broad band connection to work from the anchorage at Cabo San Lucas, we’ll forward some highly compressed video for your viewing pleasure (we don’t plan on stopping other than to up\/download e-mails).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
