Our Bahamas-Nova Scotia passage is in the books. Canadian Customs has driven down from Halifax to spend ten minutes welcoming us back to their country. The front and possible southwesterly gale about which we had given a lot of thought (as had the forecasters at NOAA) arrived towards the end of a very late dinner with friends ashore. Perfect timing to give Wind Horse a fresh water rinse.

We’re wearing many layers when stepping outside of our little cacoon. But after one day here we’re starting to adapt to the weather. By tomorrow we’ll probably only have twice the clothing bundle of the locals. Give us a week and it will be shorts and T-shirts, even if the water is still in the 45F/7C range.

Have had a chance to take a quick look around and we can see what attracts cruisers, artists, and professional seafarers to this part of the world. More on this later.

We spent Sunday morning snuggled under our heavy comforter, relishing what is the start of a new cruising chapter for us. Nova Scotia and what lies East and North is brand new territory, which will no doubt offer some challenges, but with unparalleled beautify and friendly locals, we are told.

Our main goal is, of course, Greenland. Whether this is attained is in the hands of the weather and ice gods. Right now where we really want to go is ice-bound. But one good blow could open up the bottom of Greenland. Or, if that doesn’t work, Ireland lies just over the horizon, a mere 1550 nautical miles from St. Johns, Newfoundland. Or maybe we’ll decide to stay in this part of the world and try Greenland next year if this year does not work out. As you can tell, we’ve got no real plan, and we are sticking to it.

What is exciting is the newness (to us) of these cruising grounds. There are all sorts of experiences awaiting us. Even after all these years and hundreds of thousands of miles, we still want to see what is around the next headland, over the horizon, and across the sea.

A part of this appeal is the result of what Wind Horse makes possible. At this point in our lives, if we were still aboard Sundeer or Beowulf, we doubt we’d be as aggressive in seeking new surroundings.

Consider that we have just had an enjoyable cruise from Southern California to Nova Scotia, almost six thousand miles, in six weeks total time (with a week in Panama and 2.5 weeks in the Bahamas). Of these miles less than a day was spent in other than the highest state of seagoing comfort. After clearing customs we are out on the town with friends for the evening, and exploring Lunenberg the next day.

We are starting a new chapter in our cruising lives, and cannot wait to get on with it.

Arrival in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia.
