A spur of the moment decision to visit with family for a long weekend found us looking for a spot to park Wind Horse for a few days close to an airport. In due course we found ourselves docked at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, the oldest yacht club on our continent.

We are not into cruising big cities, and had intended to leave as soon as we returned from Boston (note the interesting vessel hauled out behind us – more on PRB in another article).

Wayne, the dock master, and the very friendly members of the RNSYS made us so comfortable that our stay stretched from the weekend to a week.

If you have to be stuck in the city, this is a lovely way to do it.

This is a sailors club – just a few stinkpots are on hand. They are almost through with the annual commissioning process (boats are stored out of the water during the winter). There was a constant stream of boats docking behind us and using the big jib crane to put in their masts.

Evening racing has started, the Clipper Race boats have called in, the Open 40 class has just finished a race from Boston to Halifax and are berthed nearby, and there are several long term cruisers getting ready to head north.

Our original plan had been not to fuel before we reached Greenland, where diesel is relatively inexpensive (under one US Dollar per liter at last check). However, given the political uncertainty these days we decided to add a bit of fuel, just in case.

Over the last three years we have averaged around US$2.50 per gallon (last paying $3.70 in Panama). However, the Canadians are into taxing their fuel and this – hope you are sitting down – is $1.50 per liter diesel. So, we have slowed down to 9.5 knots for a while, which cuts our fuel consumption in half.

We’ve been blessed with fair weather most of our time in Canada (so far). Just a couple of days of rain or fog out of two weeks. Locals say to expect worse as we head north. Maybe our luck will hold.

[4

post-2304","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-dashew-blog
