Dartmouth, the small town on the Dart River where Wind Horse currently sits at anchor, fits our mental image of the UK. Densely packed yachts in marinas and on moorings, bucolic farm fields, historic buildings, narrow streets and alleyways.

Throw in a steam engine pulling a commuter train and you could imagine being in an Agatha Christie mystery. Would you believe she lived just up the Dart River?

The town square is fronted by a drying anchorage for small boats.

And surrounded with buildings dating from the sixteenth century. One claims to be the hang out of Francis Drake. He supped here prior to causing havoc amongst the invading Spaniard fleet during the Great Armada games.

This building supply company uses a warehouse which dates back to the fifteenth century.

The homes surrounding town have a medieval feel to them.

There are some seriously ancient structures still in use.

The church dates back to the 12th century, with major work completed by the 14th.

We have been working on the salon door design for the FPB 64 with Circa and the church door has given us some decorating ideas.

It appears as if the British have more dogs per capita than we have seen elsewhere (totally unscientific guess here). You see all sorts. We included this photo to show you how hair styles and facial expressions can be coordinated.

Dartmouth is our first experience with "harbor dues". These are charged by the local harbor master, even for use of your own anchor. In our case, seventeen pounds for the night. Most of the small harbors apparently have this system.

This is the type of place you could explore for a week, and still not see it all. We will have to come back and spend more time here.

Dartmouth, UK: An archetypal UK small town on the Dart River, complete with Agatha Christie-style steam engine.

[4

post-2310","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-dashew-blog
