A report on the wildlife Steve & Linda have been witnessing in Greenland.

We have been surprised by the few wildlife sightings we have had. Either we are in the wrong place at the wrong time, there are overhunting issues, or the environment does not support the prolific ecosystem to which we have become accustomed in Alaska and British Columbia.

That said, there is still plenty to look at. Sea birds of course are here, both gulls and Arctic terns.

"Image"

As are humpback whales (plus many others further north which we have not yet encountered). The blow of the humpbacks seems to be denser and taller than other areas we have been. This could be the visual impact of clear air, or the colder surroundings making the exhalation steamier.

"Image"

The humpbacks are in smaller quantities than Alaska. Still, one sighting of a mom and babe imbibing a hearty meal is enough to set the heart racing.

We spotted this group working the channel off Assiat in the southern corner of Disco Bay. With plenty of sea room we shut down engines and electronics and drifted while the whales fed around us. They would come by to check us out, and then go back to their meal.

"Image"

You can see their dinner above. The upper curved line is the bottom trace and the clumps to the left and right of the underwater mound are bait fish, probably capelin.

There are seals present, but they are wary (being a dietary staple for the Inuit with their hides used for clothing). We’ve been hoping for a polar bear sighting, but the bears have moved north for the summer.

"Image"

This enormous eagle visited us in Seldefjord. He seems quite a bit larger than the North American eagles we are used to.

What we are really longing to see are polar bears and walrus. However, these chaps are much further north, so we’ll just have to come back (or visit Norway’s Svalbard) to see them.
