A major milestone: Crossing the Arctic Circle.

This is just to prove that the sky is not always clear during the summer in Greenland (fog excluded).

Now, let’s test your powers of observation. What is special on the radar screen?

It is the circles, as in Arctic Circles. We are just crossing the latitude where the sun stays out during the summer and goes to sleep in the winter. OK, it is only six degrees higher than we have ever been, but for some reason crossing the Arctic Circle seems like a big deal to us, like that first time across the Equator.

The watch is lucky enough to watch the sunrise from the warm confines of the salon.

When the light gets to the point that we just have to get a photo, on go the layers, and we step outside for a quick snap. Air temperature equals water temperature plus chill factor. We may be in midsummer, but it is still nippy in the breeze.

The area on the charts with the most accurate soundings closely follows the coast. We are staying in this area, mostly 500 feet (150m) or more deep.

We’ve seen just a few bergs on this leg. However, this big fellow was on our route as a reminder to keep our eyes peeled. Note the brash and small bits to the left.

After 22 hours of glass calm seas and clear visibility we have the hook down at Innarssuatsiaaq Island. (Try saying that three times in a row!) Great view of the ice in Disco Bay.

A few hours after settling in we had our first anchorage neighbor since leaving Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Arctic Tern, a British yacht, is up here from home waters, heading back via Baffin Island, Labrador, and Newfoundland.

They apologized for encroaching on our territory, but we were thrilled to have someone to chat with. Besides, this is an early step in preparing ourselves for the somewhat more crowded anchorages likely to be experienced at the end of the summer.
