0230 hours

We’re underway again after a stop of a few hours in Cabo. Felt good to relax, have a bath and a long hot shower, and check the engine and related systems.

The weather looks, well, interesting (have we mentioned this is a strange year?). The synoptic fax charts continue to show a large, stationary low over Baja and the Sea of Cortez (it’s been around off and on for a month now). We are getting the backside circulation, which means N quadrant winds. The good news is that it is not tightly wound, and the Pacific High is pushed well to the west, keeping winds from its eastern flank quite light.

Conditions inside the bay are promising. Breeze down to 10 knots. But rounding the Point is discouraging as the breeze is building steadily to 18-22 knots. However, the sea is relatively calm, so this may be a local breeze, brought down to the sea surface from aloft by the mountains.

0330

Glory Be! The wind has dropped to the 10-12 knot range, seas are minuscule by our present standards, and BEOWULF is charging along at eleven knots. It is overcast, gray, and very cool. We are both wearing our heavy fleeces and socks. Water temperatures are in the mid-sixties. There may be global warming in some places, but not on the bottom of the Baja peninsula!

1000

Winds are down to five knots. Water temp is 63F! The overcast is a definite friend. It will tend to keep the lid on any sea-breeze development. Otherwise, with this cool water and a hot land mass it would be like San Francisco or Buzzards Bay in the afternoons. Have to wait and see what develops further along the coast. Meanwhile, we’ve got the throttle in and are making 11.3 knots through the water – a little over 10 over the ground (we’ll happily settle for a knot of current against us in these light conditions).
