Morning. A funnel cloud provides a shot of adrenaline.

May 12, 0800. 21deg 42min N / 64deg 29min W.

Greetings from the motor vessel Beowulf. We had a lovely sail yesterday, with calm seas and winds from 10 to 22 knots and boat speed from 10 to 16 knots – nothing like a broad reach with almost 4000 square feet of sail up to improve one’s disposition.

Yesterday afternoon we had a jolt of adrenaline when a large cumulo nimbus (thunderhead) cloud we were watching suddenly produced a funnel cloud, reaching half way to the ocean surface. As we were to leeward, with no ability to escape the thunderhead itself, we furled the light canvas and proceeded to motorsail with all dispatch to get clear of the cloud.

After which, in the fashion of these things, there was a dirth of wind until the trade-wind flow reestablished itself a little later on.

About midnight the wind simply shut off – down to where two knots is a real gust, so we’ve been motoring along. We’re only averaging about nine – which gets us to Bermuda in the AM on Monday. No sense in pushing to get their in the dark.

Meanwhile, for MPC forecast and fax charts all show a weak frontal system several hundred miles to the N. We just finished speaking with Dan Neri aboard Calvin and they are about 300 miles N. of us, and have had the front pass over them – so they’re now in a westerly air flow, broad reaching at 7 knots with their spinnaker – I doubt we’re going to catch them unless the wind shuts down again.

The AM synoptic chart from NMG (New Orleans) shows we should have SE flow of reasonable proportions – at least 10-15 knots. So much for today’s computer modeling!

Aboard Beowulf we’ve had one major problem – the chocolate chip cookie inventory has been rapidly depleted – we’re down to just three in the freezer. It is still a bit warm to bake during the day, so we may begin to have withdrawal symptoms.
