Using a digital barometer alarm to warn of approaching weather.

Some time ago we wrote about the Weems and Plath digital barometer we have aboard. One of the features we like about this piece of gear is its ability to check barometric pressure drop over time. If this exceeds its internal setting, or one which we set, an alarm sounds. We’ve only seen this happen a couple of times so far.

When you are cruising in the Sea of Cortez (Mexico) and see a sky like the photo above, you know something is going on.

We’d been watching the barometer casually, when the alarm started to beep.

And a blow up of the screen. You can see the pressure drop on the right. Three millibars in a little over an hour. The tiny sailboat (center right) indicates the alarm is on.

There was a low kicking around. As the wind did not appreciably increase, we figure this was a combination of it and a thermal low (caused by heating of the nearby mountains).

It’s nice to know we’ve got an alarm system for reefing (or watching our anchorage) – even if, in this case, it was a false alarm.
