It is getting close to the time we’ll be returning to BEOWULF, so we’re starting to work on the “to do” list (which is thankfully short). There are a few odds and ends to acquire, amongst which is an up-to-date computer. Boy, have things changed for the better in the last 12 months!

Over the years we’ve had good luck buying “re-manufactured” computers. These are units that have typically been returned for one reason or another, and as far as we’ve been able to tell, are just like new units. So, after checking all the 100% new PCs, we went this route again.

We looked at Gateway, Sony, Dell, and Compaq-all recommended by our computer expert friends-and ended up with another Gateway (our third). We made this decision for two reasons: First, we could get a 15.7″ screen, and with MaxSea we want as much “real estate” to display charts and other data as possible. Second, we know the Gateways are electronically quiet, and don’t create problems for our SSB reception.

We’ve just finished loading software onto the model 9550-and it is truly an amazing piece of hardware. Check out what you get for $1650: 15.7″ screen, dual monitor capability, 30 gig hard drive, 512 MB ram, DVD/CD-ROM reader, and 1Ghz P111 processor. Although we would have preferred Windows 2000 operating system, the XP has been easy to use, and all our software has loaded without problems (this includes Office 2000, Framemaker, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Hypersnap). The screen is so clear and sharp that it makes our desk top monitors look shabby (and it plays DVDs nicely too). I was surprised to find the twin screen system built in – no extra video boards are required. A couple of mouse clicks and you can have two screens working at once (in other words, you can have your Nav system open on one side, and related windows on the other). The speed of the system is really noticeable in panning and zooming, and when running Routings with SetSail MaxSea.

You certainly don’t need this big a screen, and there are some very cool 14″ portables now available for right at $1000. In our case, we plan to let the PC double as our DVD player, so we thought the larger screen would do double duty.

Now all we need to do is get back aboard and put the computer to work. Just another six weeks…
