(Later in the day.) Weather scenario improves, and final preparations for the passage.

Things are starting to look good. The Bermuda high appears to be strengthening, and the center is predicted to move to the east. Right now there are east to southeast winds between here and half way to Bermuda. The 96 hour surface forecast shows the high moving further east with a weak low coming off the coast behind it.

If this scenario plays out, there would be a mild compression zone with southwest winds around Bermuda at this time.

The risk factors – something we try to watch carefully – look pretty minimal within our timeframe (roughly 72 hours) for getting to Bermuda.

So, we’re busy getting Beowulf ready to go to sea. We’ve just put on 200 gallons of fuel (just in case), Linda is busy making some large portions of turkey chili, beans, and pasta to freeze, and this afternoon we’ll give the bottom and prop a wipe. The only “to do” item is replace the masthead bulb. Otherwise, get the headsails in place, bring the mizzen genoa on deck, remove sail covers, secure the dinks, put on the storm covers, and we’re ready to roll.

If the wind plays out as it appears it might – no guarantees of course – we could have a really exhilarating sail to Bermuda. Our goal…to break the three day barrier – something not yet done as far as we are aware. We’ll just have to sit back and see what happens, and enjoy the process.
