As San Diego draws near, reflections on a too-rushed "delivery".

0600 hours. Breeze has been light last 24 hours – maximum off the west end of Cedros Island last night about 0000 (Cedros is typically the bounciest spot on a passage up from Bahia Maria). Seas are more lumpy than the wind would indicate, but that’s not unusual for this part of the world.

We passed a major milestone last night – turned on the interior heat to take off the chill. That is hard to believe in the context of the way we felt just three days ago. Starting to pick up AM radio – news doesn’t sound much different than when we left.

Hard to believe it was only 26 days ago we put BEOWULF into the water in the BVI. We’ve certainly passed up some wonderful cruising grounds on this “delivery”. But all considered, the passage has still been enjoyable. It has given both of us a chance to get out of the “rut” of land-based existence, have some dialog with each other, and enjoy not having instant access to e-mail and phones. OK, there’s been a bit of discomfort from the odd period of big seas going uphill, and our experience with “Boris” was interesting – but overall, it is safe to say we have both enjoyed the routine of being at sea.

The most frustrating part is simply the pace which has been forced on us by the weather – the direct result of deciding at the last minute we wanted to bring BEOWULF back to California, where we can alternate sailing, flying, and seeing family more easily.

When you add up the total days at sea – 17 or 18 by the time we reach San Diego, for a little over 4000 miles – the trip seems pretty quick. Taken as a whole – 25 days, including transiting the canal – the pace seems crazy. It is nice BEOWULF has the capability of doing this. But we’ve decided that in the future we’re going to spend more time enjoying local sights and day sailing – and get the passaging time/port time relationship more into balance!
