With all the spectacular places there are to cruise, what we have learned over and over again is that its the people you meet along the way – afloat and ashore – who make the cruising lifestyle so wonderful.

With a break in the weather this morning – still raining but the breeze has backed off – we moved to Maloy, a medium sized town primarily devoted to fishing and service work for the offshore oil industry. The gentleman in the foreground and his wife talking with Linda came by to bid us welcome and give a general run down on town.

Then we met Per (above), who captains one of the large oil rig support vessels. Per filled us in on some of the intracies of the local coast line and the headland at Stadt (about which more another day). His discription of running a modern support vessel was fascinating. Propulsion, thusters, and winches all diesel electric and computer controlled on a ship which might carry 150 crew, work in horrendous weather, and act as tug, supply ship, do deep sea diving support, or run remote underwater vehicles.

Per’s friend Ian is a welding contractor specializing in aluminum. Ian and Per offered to show us their island.

Maloy is a quiet location on Sunday.

And the ocean is taking the day off too (you should have seen it yesterday).

Dotting the coast are a number of buildings which used to be used for commercial fishing. Commercial fishing is the toughest of jobs, and given the local navigational challenges, more dangerous here than in many of the areas we have cruised.

But today is a lovely spring day, with enough bite left in the wind (it is about 45F/7C here) to make us think positively about the tropics. The headland at Stadt is in the background.

We are supposed to have high pressure building into the week which means calm and warm weather. If so, we’ll get a good look at this cape as we round it.
