The weather scanario improves in time for Steve’s birthday, and the MaxSea routing software predicts a 6-day trip.

We awoke this morning to a lovely set of 500mb faxes – courtesy of an internet connection via the Globalstar phone we are testing (more on this later). Bottom line: the current 500mb chart and those out through the next 96 hours show a pretty clear path for us towards Virginia. If you look at the current, 48 hour, and 96 hour 500mb charts from NMF in Boston you will see some vigorous development, but it is well north of where we will be. The upper level trough shown on the 96 hour will create a strong surface depression – but it will be well out to the east in the Atlantic.

So, as soon as Linda has my birthday cake in the oven we’ll be off. Based on the current fax charts, the trip promises to be fairly smooth for a springtime passage. Looks like we have a good shot at sailing direct to the Chesapeake. The only problem we see is the wind has too much south in it for our liking – so we’ll not be able to power up and go fast – more of a real broad reach for the first day or two.

I mentioned yesterday that we were working with a nav program, MaxSea, which does routing. It is predicting a 5.5- to 6-day trip, based on the current models.
