"Lerwick-Shetland-1-135"

We promised a few details on this lovely Danish schooner. As previously mentioned, she is a circa 1850s design fishing vessel, built in 1895 and lovingly restored by her present owner. She has moderate beam, balanced lines, and a powerful hull shape for carrying sail in the North Sea where it can be blustery (in the extreme).

"Lerwick-Shetland-1-121"

Note the outhaul detail, with the clew lashed down to the boom. We started doing this about 25 years ago and thought it was something new. Seems like the Danes were ahead of us by 100 or so years.

"Storm

The canvas storm cover protects a traditional skylight style hatch from direct wave impact on the joints and gaskets.

"Heaving

Single engine traditional sailing designs with fixed props tend to be hard to handle under power. This can be a problem getting onto a windward dock (for other types of vessels too) which is where this heaving line comes into play. The monkey’s fist at the end and light line is easily thrown ashore.

"Flaked

After which this flaked spring line is pulled across. Once the spring is attached, engine can be used to force the boat alongside.

"Lerwick-Shetland-1-116"

A brief digression with these line reels on a nearby tug. High modulus rope, with loops spliced in for the bollards ashore, dragged across to the dock with heaving lines.

"Lerwick-Shetland-1-127"

A final look at Danish Betty. From this view she looks a bit stubby on the bow. However, you have to add in the underwater lines and our guess is these are much sleeker.

She’ll make a wonderful sight under sail, and your heart will leap when you row away from her at anchor. You will need a store of passion when the winter maintenance list is started.
