We resisted for a short period, but quickly became believers in electric as opposed to hand power.<\/p>\n<p>There are multiple reasons for this:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can carry big anchors and use chain without worrying about the effort required to pull this gear.<\/li>\n<li>If the anchor set is not satisfactory there is no hesitation to reanchor.<\/li>\n<li>The windlass can be used for going aloft.<\/li>\n<li>You can carry bigger anchors (intentional repeat).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/setsail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/dart-river-uk-822.jpg\" alt=\"Dart-River-UK-822\" width=\"472\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, for serious cruising a powered windlass is essential.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When we first started cruising we were urged by those in the know to get a powered windlass.
