BEOWULFs crew have been spending Sunday like millions of others, taking it easy, listening to the Sunday News shows (on the Armed Forces Radio Network), wondering what’s going to happen in tonight’s Lakers-Kings basketball game, and doing a few chores around the boat. Winds are still right on the nose, in an area in which we’re supposed to be reaching. Varying from six to 18 knots. Lots of squall activity, which is to be expected. BEOWULF is slicing through the wind chop, running at 9.8 knots and using 3.7 gallons per hour. We are a pure motorboat – no sails at present. The bad news is the current – almost two knots against us. Unless there is a major change we’ll have to make a quick stop for diesel fuel in Mexico.

We’ve been trying off and on to pick up the Hawaiian and Point Reyes, California weather fax stations – without luck so far. However, we are able to still get NMG from New Orleans. The strategic situation for our course is getting more complex.

The tropical wave within which we are currently ensconced is showing no signs of spinning up into something troublesome. The net effect has been overcast skies, which are welcome in that they continue to keep us cool, and the aforementioned squalls. However, the NOAA fax just received is showing a “Tropical Disturbance” 1000 nautical miles to our NW at about 13N and 99W. There is an additional low pressure center to the east of this position just inland.

Neither of these pose immediate risks. And in fact, the TD to the NW could actually be a benefit, if it tracks in a normal N to NW direction once it begins to mature, and if we can slip up on its NE corner and get a ride. Although the winds would be light as far away as we should be, they will be from a favorable direction.

We’ve also been using the SetSail-MaxSea “Chopper” with SailMail to access the AVN and Oceanic Experimental models. Right now both are teasing us with what might have occurred if we’d gotten away a couple of days earlier. We’d be beam reaching at 10 to 11 knots, instead of motoring dead into the wind. Maybe they’ll show us that kind of scenario with the new TD.

After we analyze the data we send an e-mail to Commander’s Weather with questions based on our observations. What we are looking for from them is feedback on what they see developing. So far, we are both in agreement. It is nice to be able to discuss the situation with professionals, who have access to satellite imagery of the cloud activity.

In the meantime, we keep our options open – and if the situation warrants, we’ll make a stop until the situation to the NW clears out or the risk factors are more discernible. The key issue here will be the steering currents aloft, and the likely direction of travel of the tropical system.
