1700 miles to go – Finally getting a chance to sail.

1000 hours. The big news for the last 24 hours is we actually got to SAIL. Forgot what it was like. The breeze built up to a steady nine to ten knots on the beam and we slipped along for a couple of hours at wind speed. Gave us a chance to check over the trusty Yanmar diesel (coolant, oil in the engine, tranny, and Hundested gear box) and enjoy quietly slipping along on almost smooth seas. Otherwise, another quiet night with just one squall (intense rain, but not much wind).

Right now we’re in the middle of another squall, with deck drains open, catching a bit of rainwater for the tanks.

Strategically weather continues to be the focus. Right now conditions remain status quo, which is good. Sky is clearing, indicating the previous tropical wave has passed. NMG faxes show no sign of developing convective activity which could cause problems. While we’ve got this clear spell we want to make haste towards cooler waters. There’s a large area of low pressure over our region. If it would move to the west a hair we would have a reaching breeze. Oh, to be able to sail!

The MaxSea chopper continues to give us good data from the AVN and Oceanic Experimental models. We’re not using these grib files so much for routing – with light airs the routing is straight line under power – but more to check on projected conditions and get a bit more detail than what we get on the official faxes from NMG. We’re also getting used to interpreting the Data Trend Center wind information. Even in these light and fluky conditions it is a real help in the decision making process – for example, do we take the time to set the sails and turn off the engine, or just keep going under power…

We’ve now completed five days under way and have assimilated into the watchkeeping routine. We are missing the usual sail trim and changes, and the constant tactical analysis of the weather which goes with a passage under sail, but there are plenty of things to keep us busy even in powerboat mode. Reading, playing cards, listening to the SSB, doing a few boat chores, cooking, dealing with e-mails, and now that we’re into the 21st century, watching DVDs at night.
