Our new design quest has led us inexorably towards a…no, I’m not ready to admit it yet. Coming back to where we left, we want a safe, comfortable, and fast passage-making design that the two us can handle in our mature years. We want to come and go from the boat three or four times a year, with a minimum amount of time spent putting it into/waking it up from storage mode. We (reluctantly) admit it is no longer prudent to fly huge downwind sails offshore on our own.

If we were to apply this new approach to BEOWULF she would be spending even more time under power than she has in the past. Nothing wrong with that, except if we give up the joy of sailing really fast in light to moderate conditions what’s the point in having a sailboat?

But we also enjoy day-sailing. In fact for much of our cruising lives, the day after we ended a passage resulted in us going for short day sail. And we’d usually go sailing two or three times a week thereafter. We might be ready to give up sailing to get us across the ocean but we cannot imagine just sitting at anchor, day after day and not going day-sailing .

The problem is we don’t know how to solve this design equation with a single boat.

Now the design begins to come into focus. The key ingredient here is that we’re prepared to admit that it no longer makes sense for us to cruise with huge sails. Having said that to ourselves over and over again, to the point where we accept it, we then have to question the point of even bothering with the rig. If half our time is spent under power now, and the majority of the rest of the time under sail is just an efficient means of getting to our next destination, and we’re being forced to abandon the pure joy of sailing really fast, why not just pull BEOWULF’s rig and turn her into a powerboat?

The answer to that is easy-we still need our day-sailing fixes after we’ve arrived-and that is something we are not prepared to give up.

But do those day sails have to be aboard the big boat? What about one of the hot new sport boats-planing dinghies with unimaginable speed, or a hot small cat? If we could fit something like this on our de-masted BEOWULF, and this becomes a lot easier without the mizzen mast in the way, we might have the best of both worlds.

I’m still not ready to admit what we’re really thinking about. Maybe next week.
