As this is being written, we’re just 100 miles (8.5 hours) from the terminus of this passage from Hawaii, and the finish of the much longer voyage which started at the end of July in New Zealand.

Conditions are the calmest we’ve seen in 8000-plus miles of voyaging. A nice way to end this phase of our lives.

Wind Horse has performed beyond expectation. This last leg in particular has been an amazing experience. In any other boat, even Beowulf, we would not have attempted it given the weather situation we knew we faced.

But early this evening, when we pull into port, Wind Horse will have done the Hawaii-to-Southern California passage in just nine days and eight (or less) hours. Distance sailed will be 2252 miles, only 100 miles longer than the great circle route. During six of the nine and a third days, she will have faced headwinds with double-crossing swell sets – in other words, a chaotic sea state. She will have delivered her crew at an average speed of more than ten knots for the passage – even after losing 15 miles a day to current.

We’re well fed, rested, and raring to go. Where that is, we have no idea. What we are sure of is that we both like this boat.

Thank you, Wind Horse. Nice Horsie!
