Finding a Crew Berth

I am a landlubber in Indiana who would like to find a boat to crew on for a month or 2 in the South Pacific. I would pay for the experience. Any suggestions for locating a boat that would take on an inexperienced crew member? Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff: Finding a berth from afar is difficult, even if you are willing to pay for the “privilege”. There are a number of people who run “training” cruises. John and Amanda Neal are one such couple, and there are others. Check the classified adds of magazines like Cruising World, Yachting World, Bluewater Sailing, and Latitude 38.

Otherwise, the best bet is to hang out on the waterfront of the various yachting centers and spread the word. In the S. Pacific the two best places would be Papeete in French Polynesia, and Suva in the Fiji group. Happy hunting.
