Working While Cruising – Good or Bad Idea?

It is so easy to take your work with you when cruising these days. Good communications – right now we have a Vodaphone 3G connection – make it very efficient. If you are computer dependent as we are, having an office afloat is simple. We run our Windows based engineering programs on the Mac we use for photos and video editing. But is this a cruising combination good idea?

We are of two minds. We love our work, and doing it afloat keeps us grounded in the real world for which our designs are intended. But cruising itself is a full time job, and splitting time between cruising and work means a less intense cruising experience.

On the other hand, one could argue it is the best of both worlds. If you have to work, because you enjoy it or need the income, it is way better to do it afloat!

An important technical parameter for us is the ability to run a clone of the desk top computer in our land office. The big computer in Arizona is a Mac Pro running Fusion so it does Windows as well as the Apple operating system. We make a bootable copy of the desktop internal hard drive on a portable external hard drive, and then run the same programs and files from the 24″ Imac with an extra monitor on the boat. Steve is shown above working on a new design while anchored off Muro, Spain.

For us, and our lifestyle, this is the perfect work environment.
