FPB 64 Mast Details

FPB-64-mast-details-101

Lets check out a few of the mast details. We’re looking at the top of the foremast.

The 1000 watt halogen flood light is for checking wave shape at night, and looking for debris or ice in the dark. It will also illuminate tropical reefs in some conditions if an emergency forces you to move in the at night.

There is a smaller foredeck flood light, the front half of the two range lights, the LED forward anchor light, and horn.

The main mast has six whip antennas, a single 12 kw NavNet 3D radar antenna, running lights, the SSB antenna tuner (connected to the headstay), aft range light, wind sensor, and aft LED anchor light. There is also a hailer and alarm system horn.

    Very well thought out.

I really appreciate the dual lights. They may not be required on a vessel her size, but I think they make all the difference in the world. Being seen at night is not a design area I would care to compromise (or use just the bare minimum.)

What is the purpose for the tab on the port side of the foremast?

    Seth:
The tang on the forward mast is for hoisting the anchor on deck when a long uphill passage is planned. The range lights have another benefit besides visibility – they command more respect as they give the appearance of a 50 meter/165 foot or larger vessel.

Tell us about the horn. Make and model?

  4. Steve Dashew Says:

    Hi Max:

The horn is made by Ongaro and has proved very effective on Wind Horse. http://www.ongaromarine.com/horns.htm

Steve, do you see any difference in performance between newer Furuno NavNet 3D radars and older Far2117 you had previously? I’ve had a chance to operate Far2117 8ft antenna radar few times in a friends work boat and I must say never seen a better radar (and I’ve seen many), period.

    Hi Andy:
Up to a year ago which is the date of our relative currency with radar, I would agree with your friends. The Furuno 2117 outperforms the consumer Furuno models.
