Non Skid on Aluminum Decks

Hello Steve, We have an Aluminum boat and we’re in the midst of denuding the deck of fairing compound. With no anti-skid, what do you think are the best deck shoes to use to minimize the chance of careening overboard in heavy weather.

Thanks for the help. Edward

Hi Edward: You’ve got two choices. One is to score the aluminum. We’ve found the best way to do this is with a six inch (150mm) cut off wheel, used at a flat angle. This will work OK with bare feet and soft soled deck shoes. However, when heeled and wet, it is not as good as a “treadmaster” type of product.

We’ve always used either treadplate or the scoring approach (we used this on our Sundeer). But as we mature, the additional security of the Treadmaster starts to look appealing–but then you have all of the issues of gluing/painting aluminum.
