Protecting Your Wireless Internet Communications

Pete Rossin, on of our FPB 64 owners, has researched protecting wireless Internet communications in the age of “Firesheep”. Pete has been kind enough to share the approach he has adopted, including screen shots, to make a similar installation relatively painless.

We have put Pete’s comments into a PDF file which can be downloaded here. We look forward to comments on this subject.

This is a easy way to protect your browsers – but not a complete security solution.
You should activate the the “Full VPN” and “System Proxy Mode” Mode to protect all of your network traffic. But this protects only your open WiFi connection and not your computer!

Any hacker can come through the tunnel to your computer. Protect your computer with a local firewall (Windows 7 has it out of the box) and with a virus scanner (use the free MS Security Essential for Windows PCs). Sorry I have no information for apple users.

If you need more information visit http://www.us-cert.gov or CERTs of your country.

The “Download here” link appears to go to a blank page. I’d love to read his ideas on this subject. Those of us with boats, RVs, and even those using our laptops at Starbucks and other WiFi hotspots need to be aware of the risks and how to limit them.

    Hi David:
Clicking on the “download” link will copy a PDF file to wherever your computer puts downloads.
