Panama to San Diego: 2000 Miles to Go

2000 miles to go – Taking advantage of the squall activity to catch some rain water (after clearing the decks of squid and flying fish).

0800 hours. Comfortable night. Mostly smooth seas, making 10+ under engine plus a push from the main. We could actually have carried the mizzen through most of the night, but it would have been feathered in several moderate squalls, so we left it furled. The usual pre-dawn display of major squall activity, and now we’ve got another biggy just ahead of us for breakfast. The NMG faxes look clear of anything potentially dangerous this morning.

And even better, they show a large area of low pressure, with weak isobar spacing, sitting over us. This should suppress any unfavorable winds for a day or two – as long as it does not move to the east, in which case we’d be catching headwinds off the backside. We’re not used to this much powering, but it is generally comfortable, and certainly cuts down on the work load!

After this next squall passes we’re going to police the decks for squid and flying fish, and if we think we’ve got them all, open the deck drains to catch fresh water on the next batch of squall activity.

We’re down to an even 2000 miles to go to San Diego – we’d do that easily in a week if we had the trades behind us – but here, motoring uphill, it is going to take a while longer.
