Towards Zacharias Havn

Wind Horse winds through fjords and narrow channels from Hvalsey to Zacharias Havn, avoiding uncharted reefs thanks to locally obtained info.

The passage from Hvalsey Church to Zacharias Havn winds through fjords and narrow channels, which we are using with the benefit of our locally obtained information. This large farm is along the route, and there are buildings in addition to those shown here. It is hard to imagine how they can grow enough fodder for the animals which must reside in the barns.

Most of the narrow passages have ice nearby, or forming partial obstructions.

We are in the habit of checking the bergs with sonar, looking for underwater projections which are in our path. This one appears clean (sonar on the right, radar on the left).

The next series of photos shows going through the very narrow passage ahead of us in the previous photos. First (above) is the Nobeltec vector C-Map chart, with the route placed by one of our friendly captains.

Radar is set to 1/8th mile range, and rings are 150 feet (45m) radii. We had been cautioned to hug the starboard shore to avoid a reef projecting on the other side.

Image

Finally the sonar image showing is a clear passage ahead. Note that our speed is down to 5.7 knots, the minimum speed at which we have best steering control. Compare the port side sonar and radar and the projecting (and hidden) reef can be put into context.

We are struggling to convey what it feels like to experience Greenland from inside Wind Horse‘s "Great Room". We are warm, dry, comfortably attired, with the best view on the planet.
