Testing the Latest Coastal Explorer

CE-desk-top3-windows.jpg

We have been using the latest iteration of Coastal Explorer this spring. This is a clean, easy to use, and quite stable nav program.

Contrary to its name, you can use this program anywhere. We used it last year in Europe and then for the passage back to the States. The screen shot shows the layout we are using in the Florida Cays. The lower left screen is zoomed in tight for maximum short range detail. Upper left is the majority of the route, while the big segment to the right is what you might call a normal view. The data panel on the right is easily customized, one of two we have now, with room for several more tabs on the right hand border that open up additional data sets.

Now, if they would just add data averaging for weather in graphical form and a routing module it would be perfect.

A curious local wants to know, why have the Keys become Cays?

  2. Steve Dashew Says:

    Howdy JLF:

Operator error. Everywhere else in the world Keys are written “Cays” and pronounced “keys”. We will adjust our writing now that we have been put on notice.

And a curious visitor from the southern hemisphere wants to know, why are you using south-up display mode?

  4. Steve Dashew Says:

    Hi James:
We normally use north up. In this case it is course (head) up which works well with vector charts where the data maintains a normal orientation.
