Now here’s a yacht to get y our heart beating a little harder. She is a steel yawl, 45 feet on deck, with a very traditional gaff rig.
Moira and Andrew Wilkes are her proud owners. We first this intrepid couple while anchored in Greenland’s Disco Bay.
There previous yacht, Arctic Tern, was a 68 foot cutter, so the gaff rig is quite a change.
They are headed to Ireland in the next few days, and then on to Greenland, normally an upwind passage. If things go well they will visit us in Arizona this winter after leaving the boat in Alaska. We’ll leave the route they are planning to your imagination.
Young Larry looks like the designed was influenced by John Alden. Certainly the bow and stern have the traditional Alden shape.
We’ll leave you with a few photos of this handsome craft.

Hi,All,
I was sailing a little 16ft dinghy with my two sons ,Eoghan,11& Shane 7 behind a local sand bar,the cunnigar ,when we spotted an unusual rig with a bright red gaff we were stretching to see over the peninsula & then in a gap saw the lovely set of sail.we followed her later as she was moored against the Quay wall in Dungarvan and sailed past in our little dinghy,my son Eoghan, exclaimed ” Now that’s a real Tall Ship !
Co incidentally ,MR Keoghan the two boys School Principle was onboard, which made it more special!!
Seek the Frozen Lands!
Follow Crozier,McClure & McClintock and safe Northern Passage.

Maura, heard you were in the quay and so sorry to miss you.Young Larry looks a dream.I think I read about her in classic boat some time.Colum Whelan was telling me about her tonight in the moorings,i was in at terry daltons funeral. The ranks of the old stock are fast fading. Are you still chartering?Ive quit the galway boat to mspend some time at home, gertie has plenty of work for me.So the omly sailing i get is in a small lugger i got altered from a dingy.Hope you have a pleasant voyage to Greenland sounds cold. high water in thurles!

We also saw Young Larry in Pond Inlet, North Baffin Island and the gateway to the northwest passage. We had a delightful visit albight short since we were on a break from the dental clinic walking along the beach. We gave the hearty crew the keys to our place and they enjoyed hot showers and laundry facilities. The next day I met Andrew in the local Northern store where he was in search of god knows what! We wish them well on their attempt at the passage which we did in the comfort of the Clipper Adventurer last year which incidently ran aground near Coppermine last week.

Have enjoyed reading about ‘Young Larry’. Would like to make a trip around Baffin with my schooner if I can get things together. I noticed your Refleks cabin heater. Welcome your help with a couple of questions:
Model #
Hourly consumption
Any ignition issues while heeled or underway
Dedicated tank or tied in with the fuel tank (makeup particulars)
Gratefull for any comments. Thanks.

Enjoyed meeting Andrew and Maire in Whittier Alaska and sharing a glass of wine aboard Young Larry at Naked Island, Prince William Sound, Alaska.

I am writing a guide to the Northwest Passage for Bradt TravelGuides. Do you have a photo of Young Larry in an NWP setting and would you let me use it? Best wishes, Tony Soper
