Windjammer End Of The Season Jamboree

We had a heads up this morning that the end of the season Windjammer Jamboree, a get-together of all the working sailing vessels in the area was happening over the next few days in nearby Brooklin. With a fresh norther blowing and clear skies, this was too good an opportunity to miss. So the list of “to do’s” was put away yet again, the cameras readied, and we set out to see what we could see.

There were all manner of traditional wooden sailing vessels on-hand. From little cutters like Vela, above, to

powerful schooners. All bent on demonstrating their sailing prowess, in particular sailing through the fleet, tacking, and then making one’s way to the head of the anchorage, before settling back on the hook.

The schooners would dance past our bow, dropping headsails as they went, easing first the gaff peaks, and then the booms.

Some would carry full sail, sheets cracked they accelerated through what looked like an impenetrable forest of spars, and then

throw the helm up, tack, and gather way for an exit.

Sorting trough the hundreds of photos is an impossible task right now, so we’ll leave you with a few of the favorites from our first pass.

Great photos as always. Wonder where they can find the shipwrights to keep up with the repairs?

  2. Tom Weese Says:

Great Photos Skip. Not many of those boats on the west coast.

I miss Maine!! I was fortunate enough to work on a few of these beautiful Schooner’s for a couple of years. A lot of hard work and love is put into these vessels! @Kent- no shipwrights. The crew does all the painting and up keep/repairs as well as the Captains/Owners.
